A job. I wasn’t one of the cool kids who’s grandpa gave them a camera at the age of five and they fell in love with photography, oh no. I was twenty-two, I had just graduated from college with a Bachelors in Marketing and scored this epic gig in Advertising in Los Angeles. Little did I know, the Social Media Marketing job title meant that I was in charge of every aspect of social media marketing – copywriting, scheduling, web design, ad creation, content creation and you guessed it, photography. I had no idea what I was doing but companies sending me stock photos to use for Ad Campaigns wasn’t going to cut it. So they gave me a camera and said “figure it out”.
Well, I figured it out. And I got pretty damn good at it. Branding photography quickly turned in to headshots, headshots turned into family photos, family photos turned into weddings and the next thing I know, I’m quitting my cushy Advertising job to become a full time photographer.
There is something about being present in a moment, curating an aesthetic, or simply documenting a feeling that made me feel like I was doing more than just taking photos. I was living my true creative live, I was creating imagery that made people feel like they were part of a memory even if they weren’t there. I was preserving people at a time in their lives that made them feel complete. The saying goes “A picture is worth a thousand words” but for me, imagery is worth a million memories. Photos are proof that we were present, and it’s my privilege to preserve memories with you.
I am a San Diego born and raised, ocean dwelling, passport stamping, living life for the adventure multicultural black woman with deep rooted empathy and creativity.
In my true Gemini form, I am both:
introverted and extroverted
curated and carefree
minimalist and maximalist
respectful and smart ass
I am a force yet remain completely reserved.
I am an organized chaos of all the beautiful things.
Why do I tell you all this?
Because who I am, at my core, directly affects how I see the world and the memories I take from it.
I live my life in a way that is deeply honest, and adventurous, and compassionate and loving and spontaneous and polished and free.
In a digital space it's scary to put your whole self out there, but here I am, unfiltered, unapologetic, unbothered.
Dare I say, I am also a damn good time.
I crave authenticity (even though I hate how fake that word has become), I value individuality, I cherish love. And all of that that translates in to how I will capture your story. It a nostalgic photojournalism that I capture, and then the bougie in me comes out to create an editorial style of storytelling. You get both worlds with me, because that’s just who I am.
